Donate to HMI

We rely on voluntary contributions from our many friends — like you — to help support our mission to improve the health and productivity of land – and to provide sustainable livelihoods for the people who live and work on that land. Your gift is important.

Why your contribution makes a difference

donor_4upThe basis for our economy — and for life itself — is that fragile thin layer of topsoil — literally the earth beneath our feet. We neglect that topsoil at our peril. It provides the sustenance for all life, from the food we eat to the minerals needed for industry. Without a careful and conservative relationship to our soils, wetlands go away, river flows are reduced, aquifers are diminished, and productivity of land — and the people on it — moves dramatically to an unsustainable level. Healthy, productive land is critical to our very existence. Your gift to HMI helps protect the earth. Our techniques improve biodiversity, reverse desertification, and increase carbon sequestration — all with a triple bottom line sensibility.

Your support counts

HMI is a 501c3 non-profit. A portion of our income is earned by working with corporations, government agencies, and other enterprises who value our services. Those organizations understand the value of the work we do for them; appreciate the financial transparency that comes with our non-profit status; and want to support our mission. That fee-for service work helps keep our doors open, our staff employed and makes us sustainable, so that we can develop and grow a full range of non-profit programs in support of our mission. And that is where your contribution makes a real difference. Our traditional non-profit programs need your help.

HMI education and outreach programs are made possible partly by grants, and partly by support and donations from valued friends like you.

Matching funds

For example, we have a grant supported by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture), for our “Beginning Women Farmers” program in 6 northeast U.S. states. It is an excellent grant, but the grant only pays for a portion of the total 3-year program. The USDA grant requires HMI to raise and match a percentage of funds to pay for the rest of program. We depend on your generosity for those funds.

These HMI Programs need your support

donor4_4up Kids on the Land — over 2,000 kids from Kindergarten through 6th grade have already learned about their ecosystem and all the critters and plants that keep it healthy. This program is already a winner and has received rave reviews from educators, parents, and kids alike. Operated on a shoestring budget for the last 6 years, we hope to expand this successful program throughout Texas, California, Colorado, New Mexico and beyond. We can only do it with your help.

Gen Next —Many high school and college students have a passion for the future of the planet, the environment and land health. This year, as a pilot project, HMI has begun offering workshops at Colorado College designed to help agriculture students learn more about caring for the important future resource base of the land. Your donation will help fund this program and grow it to include other colleges and universities throughout the U.S. , as well as in other countries.

Your own backyard —HMI is working on a series of local land conservation initiatives that show how smaller, suburban landscapes can benefit from holistic land management. Collaborative projects are underway to involve local communities in small scale agriculture enterprises, including management of public and open spaces. Here’s a way you can make a different right where you live!

Telling the story —HMI is embarked on telling its important story in as many ways as possible. From production of our PBS documentary “The First Millimeter: Healing the Earth” to gathering and distributing data and success stories on farms and ranches; to sponsoring speakers and workshops, HMI needs your help to get the word out.

Scholarships —There are many people who want to learn more about HM practices, but can't afford it. Your contribution to the HMI scholarship program will help.
