*HMI Event* – Ranching with Nature – Colorado

May 4, 2022 - May 5, 2022

Ranching with Nature

Flourishing Ecosystems & Thriving Profits

May 4-5, 2022
Chico Basin Ranch
Colorado Springs, Colorado

Learn how to transform your ranchland or farmland into a more flourishing ecosystem and thriving business that is home to thick native grasses; diverse plant species; and a healthy mix of wildlife, birds, and pollinators that supports you and your family in multiple ways.

Your land, no matter what condition it’s in right now, can be more drought resilient AND provide a landscape for more profits than you’ve ever had before.

What if we showed you a way to transform your ranchland or farmland into a more flourishing ecosystem and thriving business? Your land can be home to thick native grasses; diverse plant species; and a healthy mix of wildlife, birds, and pollinators that supports you and your family in multiple ways. If that’s the path you want to be on, you need to join us for our 2-day workshop, Ranching with Nature: Flourishing Ecosystems & Thriving Profits

Sound too good to be true? Our Success Stories hold water (and our soils do, too). We believe far too many ranchers and farmers have suffered from the growing demands of the ag industry, but our simpler methods take us back to how ranching and farming should be, as nature intended. Will you join us?

Topics will include:

  • Improving the whole of your land stewardship – how profit, management, and ecology link together
  • Introduction of ecosystem function – the 4 critical components
  • Plant and animal performance is key for profitability
  • How to strategically use tools like grazing and rest to enhance the health of your soil, water, plants, and animals
  • Enhancing natural processes (soil health, water infiltration, and plant diversity) improves ecological resilience for drought and enhances habitat for birds and pollinators
  • Financial considerations and diversity decisions for healthy profits and multiple enterprises
  • Examination of risk, stress, and quality of life in production decisions, especially drought
  • Monitoring and testing to help you reach your goals
  • Learn steps you can take back home that allow for early success

These 2 days are guaranteed to inspire and empower you to strengthen your ranch or farm business

– or we’ll give you your money back!

Chico Basin Ranch

22500 South Peyton Highway, Colorado Springs, CO 80928

The Chico Basin Ranch is a working cattle ranch 45 minutes southeast of Colorado Springs, Colorado owned by the Colorado State Land Board and managed by Ranchlands, a family-based ranch management company. The Chico’s principal enterprise is raising seedstock Beefmaster cattle; though it additionally houses a diversified land-based business mix of guest programs such as hunting, fishing; leather product manufacturing; education programs for K-12, college students, and adults; art programs; and management training services.

For the last 20 years, Ranchlands has partnered with Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory to band migratory birds as the cornerstone of their education program. The ranch encompasses nearly 90,000 acres of pristine shortgrass prairie with five spring-fed lakes and countless springs, making it one of the largest uninterrupted stretches of shortgrass and sandsage prairie left in the country.

Speakers

Duke Phillips III – Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Ranchlands

Duke Phillips III is the founder and CEO of Ranchlands, a Colorado-based, family-owned ranch management company. Duke has led a fascinating life, starting with his early years spent growing up on a remote cattle ranch in rural Mexico. His twenties were devoted to traveling and working around the world, including places like Europe, Central America, Australia, and the Bering Sea. Around age thirty he started his first real job in ranching, which eventually led to the formation of his company Ranchlands. Since its beginnings over two decades ago, Ranchlands has set a new standard what is possible when ranching, conservation, education, and business are successfully combined. And Ranchlands partnership with Colorado’s State Land Board on the Chico Basin Ranch is a case study in effective, mutually beneficial public-private partnerships.

Tess Leach – Head of Business Development, Ranchlands

Duke Phillips IV – Chief Operating Officer, Ranchlands

Ben Berlinger – Rangeland Management Specialist (ret.) Natural Resources Conservation Service, Rocky Ford, Colorado

Ben is recently retired from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as a Rangeland Management Specialist in La Junta, and is currently working part time with the NRCS in Rocky Ford as a Rangeland Resource Specialist.  He was employed for the past 28 years as the Rangeland Management Specialist for southeastern Colorado.

Ben is a Colorado native.  He attended Colorado State University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Rangeland Ecosystem Science and Forest Management. Ben has been a member of the Society for Range Management (SRM) since 1974 and holds a professional certification from the SRM as a Certified Professional in Rangeland Management.  He served as President of the Colorado Section of the SRM in 1991.  He is currently the Chairman of the Youth Activities Committee of the Colorado Section SRM with instructional responsibilities to youth in the field of rangeland management education at Camp Rocky and FFA programs throughout eastern Colorado.

Wayne Knight – Interim Executive Director and Certified Educator, Holistic Management International

With 27 years of ranching experience using Holistic Management, Wayne has had an identity crisis. When he joined the 11,000-acre family ranching business he called himself a cattle rancher. He changed to calling himself a grass farmer. Later still, he called himself a soil-microbe farmer, though he has always marketed beef. Privileged to work with his father, Tom Knight, who was an early adopter of Holistic Management under Allan Savory – Stan Parsons consulting, Wayne enthusiastically increased and intensified the practices HMI teaches. He became an HMI Certified Educator in 2006 and was actively involved with the Southern African Certified Educator community organization, Community Dynamics. He has spoken at numerous conferences in Southern Africa, trained and mentored farmers, hosted open days on his property, and has written about his positive results using Holistic Management. Before joining the team at HMI Wayne served as a board member of the organization for 8 years. Through his enthusiasm for Holistic Management, Wayne has traveled widely visiting farmers who practice high-density, long recovery grazing practices in Southern Africa, Australia, and the US. As a young graduate with a Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Natal, South Africa, he traveled across the US west working on ranches in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, California, and New Mexico. When not involved in Holistic Management you will find him fishing, birding, hiking, or exploring wild spaces and places with his family. An enthusiastic traveler, hunter, and photographer, he loves discovering new places and making new friends.

Aaron Maier – Range Ecologist, Audubon’s Conservation Ranching Program

Aaron Maier is the Range Ecologist for Audubon’s Conservation Ranching program and is a Certified Ecologist with the Ecological Society of America.  Aaron is a Certified Mediator with the WY Dept. of Agriculture and past Secretary/Treasurer of the WY Section of the Society for Range Management.  Aaron has a B.S. in Forestry/Rangeland Resources from the University of Montana and a M.S. in Rangeland Ecology from the University of Wyoming.
