Our supporters at Shade Haven have recently offered the HMI network a great deal on their portable shade structures that have been proven to improve animal performance in the field and increase profits by reducing the heat stress that can occur if there isn’t adequate shade in pastures where producers are working to create high animal impact to improve soil health and increase recovery time for plants. This special offer ends 2/1/17.
The SH1200 model comes with a ten-year warranty and features the largest mobile shade canopy on the market. It is collapsible and fully mobile (off and on road). At approximately 40 feet in diameter or 1200 sq. ft. in area, it can shade at one time 50-60 cattle; however, it can offer meaningful shade up to 75 or more as they will not all be under the shade at the same time. Not only does the mobile shade provide heat stress relief which makes for healthier and more productive cattle, but it also serves as a way for farmers to control nutrient distribution in their pastures and avoid concentrations near permanent structures, trees, as well as streams and rivers.
The Shade Haven Model SH500 is a new model that has a lower price because it is a kit assembled shade canopy approximately 22 feet in length that covers 500 sq. ft. in area, shading 20-30 cattle at one time.
So how does one of these structures earn you 22.3% annualized ROI? As an example, if you spend $17,000 on the SH 1200 that shelters 50 cows that you are direct marketing, in 10 years you will have had an additional income gain of $55,000 from the additional live weight gain on those animals not dealing with heat stress (see calculations below).
Studies show that with the use of artificial shade cattle performed better than their peers without shade with an increase of 1.25 lb per day for cows, 0.41 lb per day for calves, and 0.89 lb per day for steers. (From “Shade Options for Grazing Cattle” Stephen F. Higgins, et al. Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. U. of Kentucky Dept. of Agriculture. 2011)
Likewise, for dairy animals the effect of shade is dramatic in that, “reducing solar radiation through artificial shade from permanent structure resulted in a 10-19% increase in milk production.” (From “Florida Dairy Farm Situation and Outlook 2006” Giesy, R., et. al. University of Florida, IFAS, January, 2006, and Harris B., “Feeding and Managing Cows in Warm Weather”, University of Florida, IFAS, June, 2003.)
Right now the SH1200 costs $16900 and the SH500 is $8995. But Shade Haven is offering 10% off the SH1200 and selling the SH500 for only $6995 now through 2/1/17 to the HMI network. Just mention you saw the offer on HMI’s site when you contact the folks at Shade Haven.
