This video of Holistic Management practitioners Nancy Ranney and Melvin Johnson of the Ranney Ranch near Corona, New Mexico demonstrates the profound difference that good management makes on working landscapes in the West. As Melvin Johnson, ranch manager for the Ranney Ranch, points out so clearly, standing next to a fence separating the Ranney Ranch from their neighbors, the only difference from the highly productive, healthy landscape of the Ranney Ranch and the less productive ranch across the fence line is the decisions and management by the owners.
Melvin also points out that he originally was very dubious about Holistic Management and was initially not really wanting to try it. But they tested it on a small area at first and as they saw the results, he couldn’t ignore what he was seeing. The results made him commit to using these practices on more of the ranch. Both he and owner, Nancy Ranney are pleased at the increased biodiversity and vigor of the landscape including seeing the land continuing to improve even during a drought.
