My Bio:
We are located in the heart of the US Dust Bowl in extreme Southeast Colorado. The average precipitation ranges from 14-16″ in our area and the average elevation on operation is 4600′. Our families moved to this area around the turn of the century and have been involved in both farming and ranching since that time. We are roughly half farmland and half ranchland, and we are in the process of developing water and related infrastructure on 0ur cropland in an effort to incorporate livestock on those acres. We were introduced to the Soil Health principles in 2010 and have been following that path to improving our land since that time. We are relatively new to Holistic Management and we are finding that there is a desire by the next generation to embrace new ways of managing land. We are excited to be a part of the regenerative movement and have been promoting and experimenting with both natural farming and pasture cropping since 2013. My Bio:
Durham Ranch is a 55,000 acre bison ranch that is owned and operated by the Flocchini family and located near Wright, in the northeast corner of Wyoming. The ranch runs up to 3000 herd of bison and operating under Flocchini ownership for 3 generations, since 1965. Our family has been practicing sustainable ranching from day one—long before it became a trendy catchphrase. We use words like natural, holistic and sustainable because they are the founding principles by which we have run one of the largest bison ranches in North America. We believe to our core that these principles guide us in safeguarding the well being of one of America’s greatest treasures and in raising the finest bison in the world. The Holistic Management International model used at Durham Ranch enables us to grow healthy animals and produce high-quality meats and products while improving the quality of the land where the bison graze. The Flocchini family is dedicated to returning the ranch land to its’ past splendor. We are inspired by what history reveals to us. A countryside with tremendous, complex grasslands of unlimited potential; where the environment is stable and balanced, wildlife is visible and healthy, and creeks and springs flow. With a commitment to Holistic Management, we here at Durham Ranch are convinced that we are involved in sustaining our land so that many generations beyond ours are able to enjoy life as we have. My Bio:
The mission of Greenacres is to create exceptional educational experiences for children in the areas of cultural arts, environment, and regenerative agriculture. We manage our farm to support this education and research. We are visited by over 30,000 school children annually. Greenacres adopted HMI practices many years ago in the management of our livestock and pastures where we always focus on the management of the farm as a whole. The foundation of our agriculture enterprise is a herd of Registered Black Angus that have been bred for performance is a grass finishing system. Since the early 1990s, Greenacres has been committed to multi-species grazing utilizing ruminants and poultry to balance manure input and control weeds and insects. Our livestock production methods produce a high-quality product that is sold locally, Our plant production systems include an 8,000 sq. ft. greenhouse and gardens that follow pre-1945 practices and living soil approach. All of these areas are supported by active in-house research teams and external research partnerships. One of our recent publications, in partnership with Michigan State University, focused on the nutritional analysis of beef marketed under a grass-fed label. We are advancing this study by focusing on the role production practices play on product outcomes and their relation to soil health. We are currently working with the University of Tennessee on introduction, establishment, and use of warm-season grasses in a beef production system. Other research projects include the monitoring of soil carbon; the use of pastured poultry to reduce tick populations; and the process of using hog impact to disrupt the growth of invasive plant species – all within a Holistically-Managed system. All of the work and decisions at Greenacres are in alignment with our mission and are evidence-based, i.e. supported through research and experience. Markegard Family Grass-Fed provides the community with locally born, raised, and processed certified Grass-Fed Beef, Grass-Fed Lamb, Pastured Pork & Pastured Chicken. Customers can order beef, lamb, and pork online through our shop to be delivered around the Bay Area at Farmers Markets. Our philosophy in grazing is to manage the cattle herd to simulate the large herds of elk and antelope which once roamed California’s grasslands. We accomplish this by keeping the herd moving with Holistic Planned Grazing, so as never to overgraze an area, but to stimulate growth and grassland health through properly timed grazing. Watershed Stewardship is at the forefront of our management practices. Some of the management practices Markegard Family Grass-Fed utilizes on rangeland include keyline design, catchment ponds, permaculture, Holistic Management, Holistic Planned grazing and carbon farming. Markegard Family Grass-Fed has hosted globally recognized rangeland managers including Brock Dolman, Darren Doherty and Joel Salatin. We are dedicated to spreading awareness of good land stewardship practices through education, outreach and action. Education is an ongoing process at Markegard Family Grass-Fed. My Bio:
Christine raises cattle, sheep, pigs, turkeys and layers using Holistic Management and regenerative agricultural practices on 100 acres in East Central Texas. She direct markets the meat to customers and regularly holds events at the ranch. Christine has spent the first two thirds of her career in the corporate world trading agricultural commodities and in oil/gas marketing, and has been able to build and increase her ranch customer base by 300% since she became serious about ranching in 2016. She transitioned from what she calls her ‘homesteading’ stage, while she was in the corporate world, to almost full time ranching in 2016 after she graduated from HMI’s Beginning Farmer Rancher course in Texas (‘BFR’). She has been applying the tools and knowledge she gained during the BFR course to improve her triple bottom line (financial, social and environmental) in her ranching operation. Helping others achieve a better triple bottom line, especially in promoting their products, is a passion for her. She has trained and coached fellow farmers market vendors, as well as other producers, since 2016 in improving their marketing strategy and finances. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.
