A recent article published on the Union of Concerned Scientists website by Marcia Delonge, titled "Regenerative Farming Trailblazers: How Reintegrating Livestock and Restoring Soils Can Lead to More Resilient Farms," featured a lead photo of HMI Board member Jonathan Cobb as well as the stories of numerous other regenerative agriculturalists who have learned how to increase the profitability and resilience of their farms.
As Ms. Delonge notes, livestock not only increase soil health, they are a means of increasing the value and profitability of cover crops that might not sell well as a cash crop. In essence, they become crop insurance as well as another means of increasing the profit per acre of a farm.
Del Ficke, a producer from Pleasant Dale, Nebraska was quoted as saying: “I used to farm 7,000 acres. Now I’m less than 700 acres, but 70 percent more profitable.” This same focus of right sizing and focusing on profitability rather than gross income is a comment mentioned consistently by regenerative agriculturalists. In fact, a recent study showed that regenerative agriculture was 78% more profitable (right in line with what Mr. Ficke noticed).
