Field Day Recap: One-Day Grazing Exercise, Long-Term Lessons - Holly, Colorado

On March 11, 2022, thirty-two people of all ages and from several different states braved the cold and wind to attend an Open Gate Field Day Hosted by Corey Stephens, owner/operator at Willhite &Willhite, INC in Holly, Colorado.

Attendees learned about the ecological benefits of high stock density grazing, grazing planning and how Holistic Management can increase production and profitability from long time Holistic Management practitioner and owner/operator of Brett Gray Ranch, Louis Martin.

Despite the cold the attendees enjoyed an on-the-land safe to fail presentation where they observed and discussed a small grazing paddock before cattle were brought in and after grazing at high stock density. Corey Stephens shared his expected outcome from this trial as well as results from a previous trial with the group.

Storm Casper, retired NRCS, soil health team showed the group a compelling presentation on the importance of healthy soil and effective rainwater infiltration.

Linda Pechin-Long, owner/operator of Graze the Prairie and HMI Certified Educator trainee shared how quickly and easily one can estimate the amount of forage available to meet animal demand in each paddock.
