From Golf Courses to Farmland

sheepgolf

An interesting article in The Modern Farmer notes the irony of how many golf courses in the U.S. are situated on what was once farmland and now they are reverting back to farmland. More golf courses are closing than opening since 2006 and golfers are down by 400,000 in the last year. Hundreds of these courses are closing every year. This can be a difficult decision given that high productive land in Illionis is averaging a profit of $211/acre. However Holistic Management farmer Gabe Brown in North Dakota is averaging $855/acre profit as he works to create healthy soil. Read more about Gabe here. Or, watch this video about a California golf course using sheep to maintain the rough as they work for greater sustainability of their golf course.
