Grassfed Is Great for Memorial Day Barbecues

People in the U.S. eat more beef on Memorial Day than any other day of the year says environmental group Friends of the Earth. So how do you make this celebration and remembrance day more sustainable? Barbecue some grassfed or organic meat. Using meat you know you can trust has been grown to be better for your health, the animals, and the planet is a great way to begin the official start of the summer barbecue season. The folks at Friends of the Earth are even encouraging people to take the pledge to buy healthier meat. More than 80% of meat in the U.S. is processed by just four large companies which leads to a lot of health issues and environmental degradation. But, grassfed meat is gaining more market share and widely available with more than a $4 billion market share. Just remember that 80% of the grassfed meat is imported, so if you can, buy locally. The more you can support local farmers and ranchers who have good grazing and animal welfare practices, the more you know your menu supports regenerative agriculture. Friends of the Earth also produced a short video with suggestions on certification programs that help you buy quality grassfed meat, like the American Grassfed Association, and suggested one grassfed burger recipe that helps you stretch your meat a little further to encourage you to buy quality meat even if it costs a little more.
