Healthy Watersheds through Planned Grazing

If you haven't seen the video of the Dixon Water Foundation's profile for winning the 2017 Leopold Award, you should check out the article about their award and their work. Recently On Pasture interviewed Robert Potts, CEO of the Dixon Water Foundation and board member for HMI about their focus on planned grazing and the results they've gotten. "Healthy watersheds through good land management, that’s what we work on,” says Robert. "Managing the land is the critical component in making sure we have enough water and the kind of water we want going forward." Holistic Planned Grazing is the Dixon Water Foundation's only tool whether working on the Mimms Ranch in the Chihuahuan Desert or bringing back the tallgrass prairie at the Leo Ranch near Dallas. They work to provide appropriate disturbance to improve the health of the grasslands they manage.  And they work to do it in such a way that they can make a profit. In doing so, they show other ranchers that good stewardship should result in a thriving business as good work must be paid for if it is to be sustainable. An article about the effect that the Dixon Water Foundation's planned grazing has had on improving wildlife habitat was also featured in the Texas Wildlife Association's magazine. The Dixon Water Foundation ranches are run to be profitable from both cattle sales and hunting leases. Good grazing can improve soil health and wildlife habitat which improves wildlife counts and quality that can improve the bottom lines for these ranches. Thanks to the Dixon Water Foundation's support of HMI as a valued partner in promoting and providing education in Holistic Management.
