Changing habits can be challenging, but using your holistic goal can help. If you are finding that you are not making progress toward your holistic goal with the consistency you would like, pick one of the values you have written down that you don’t seem to be making the progress toward you want. If it’s a family or business-wide issue, ask everyone involved what would be the behaviors or systems that would help. Get specific. Pick the one new behavior or system that will give you the most return. For example, if you want healthy bodies, but you find you aren’t making the time for exercise, find the “cue” that starts you down the path that takes you away from health. It may be that you pick up the TV remote as soon as you walk in the house after work. You can then use that “cue” to move you toward the right path. That may mean sticking a note with “Walk” across the power button on the remote. It may mean talking to friend to see if they will walk with you at lunch instead of working through lunch. Whatever the behavior, make sure to recognize the “cue” and use it change behavior. Having an attainable goal to measure toward is also critical (i.e. lose five pounds, lower blood pressure by five points, etc.). Lastly, celebrate when you attain your goal. Recognizing achievements means you recognize your ability to change and keep making changes that move you towards your holistic goal.
