HMI Tip: Fridge Magnets

Fridge Magnets for an Organized, Healthy Food System at Home

From HMI's Executive Director, Dr. Ann Adams

Two of our quality of life statements in our holistic goal are:

  1. We want healthy food.

  2. We want a safe nurturing environment.

Toward that end we find our “fridge magnets” a critical part of our food production system in our kitchen. We buy a lot of fresh vegetables, make our own broth, and have fresh raw goat’s milk. Needless to say, our fridge is usually pretty full. During the week when things get hectic, it is easy to lose track of what was cooked when and what needs to be used up, made into cheese, frozen, or given to the dogs or chickens. So we created some “fridge magnets” out of magnets you get from any number of businesses. We just glue some paper over top of the magnet then use a marker to create a magnet with different days of the week on it. We also have magnets with a “K” for kefir or a “Y” for yogurt or "Dog" for things going to the dog so we can easily distinguish different milk products and who they are for. We then put those magnets on top of canning jar lids and know which items need attention. We also put them on top of plastic lids that cover the glass pyrex dishes of left overs (they don’t stick, but they stay in place and help us keep track of our food). Our food waste has gone down with this system in place and we feel like we are making more progress toward our holistic goal! Check out Ann's book 'At Home with Holistic Management'.
