Holistic Management educator Jose Manuel Perez is working on bringing sustainable ranching to the borderlands between Mexico and the U.S. Working with Cuenca Los Ojos Jose has been educating and supporting local ranchers to improve their grazing management and incorporate holistic planned grazing. Cattle are moved four times a day and recovery periods of up to two years are given to improve the forage stands. Combined with other habitat restoration work over 4000 acres have been restored and 8 miles of rivers are now flowing year-round. Restoring habitat is a critical step to bring back native wildlife populations such as Coues deers, Black bears and Gould’s turkeys.
Jose learned Holistic Management through Next Step Program. With this program, he was able to complete each module in Mexico and develop his skills in grazing planning and financial planning through working one-on-one with an HMI Certified Educator mentor that he was paired with for each class. These classes are tailored to agricultural producers or NGO personnel to help them apply Holistic Management to the conservation projects they are working on.
