It is with great sadness that HMI learned that Joe Maddox passed away at the age of 83 on February 18, 2024, in San Angelo, Texas, surrounded by his family. During his extended six-year battle with throat cancer he showed great strength, perseverance, and an unwavering positive attitude.
Joe lived his life as a cowboy, and in 1971, expanded the Maddox Ranches built by his father and grandfather from Mitchell County to Nolan County, Texas and into New Mexico. He was the Ranch Manager of the West Ranch in Ozona, Texas, for Holistic Management International from 2000-2014. He continued his ranching when he and his wife, Peggy, moved to Hermleigh, Texas, in 2014.
Joe met the love of his life, Peggy Sue Barnes Maddox, at age 14 in Sweetwater, Texas. They were married in 1960 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Joe attended Texas Christian University in 1958 and was a member of the freshman football team. He transferred to Texas Tech University in 1960 graduated in 1963 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. Joe is survived by his wife, Peggy, and their children, Marjori Maddox Krebs and Jim Dalton Maddox and families.
Joe loved to ranch, play golf, listen to Willie’s Roadhouse, enjoy a good meal with good company, cheer on the Dallas Cowboys, and dance with Peggy in the kitchen on Sunday mornings. He was a caring, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather who never met a stranger, and was known to call Mrs. Allen’s Fried Chicken to see when they would be serving apple cobbler. He taught us how to live a life full of fun, love, family, appreciation, and relationships.
Joe and Peggy have been an inspiration to the Holistic Management community for almost 40 years, as they have shared their story and examples of managing holistically. HMI offers our condolences to Peggy and the Maddox family. Joe will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Joe Price Maddox to the Mitchell County Stock Show Association, P. O. Box 657, Colorado City, Texas, 79512.
Calling hours will be held at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 E. 3rd St., Sweetwater, TX from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
