At HMI, we are active sup
porters of a fresh, local, healthy and sustainable food system, which can strengthen local economies while also providing consumers with foods high in nutrient density. But what about the health benefits of locally sourced foods? We've all read accounts from those suffering from various illnesses about how changing the way they ate, and more importantly, what they ate was a turning point in their return to good health.
But food as medicine?
At least one doctor is convinced that the way to better health is through better food. Dr. Brian Frank who practices family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. In this interview with Dr. Frank on Eco Centric, he explains the importance of local foods, how he grew up understanding the importance of local food, and why he is a proponent of "prescribing" fresh, local, healthy produce for his patients.
So the next time you visit your doctor, you may walk out with a prescription - for fresh food; which leads us to this conclusion: It's not just an apple a day that may keep the doctor away - any fresh, local, and nutrient dense food will do!
