Many Options for Eating Locally

The demand for local food has never been greater, but sometimes it can be a little more challenging to buy locally grown food. But remember that by buying locally grown food you are helping to create a local food system that provides you and your family nutritious food, creates healthy land, keeps more money in the local economy, and supports local family farms. You can buy your locally grown food direct from the producer at a farmer's market, farm stand, buyer's club, or through a community-supported agriculture (CSA) share. You can also support local restaurants and grocery stores that buy locally-grown food. There are great websites out there like Local Harvest and Agrilicious which allow you to find local farmers and farmer's markets in your areas. Another great site is Eat Wild that has listings for folks raising grassfed products. The American Grassfed Association also has listings for their certified producers as does Animal Welfare Approved. The Eat Well Guide by Grace Communications Foundation lists restaurants and grocery stores that buy locally grown food. The Weston Price Foundation also lists their local chapters where you can learn from people in your community about where to source nutrient-dense food. We highly recommend that when you are talking to producers you are buying from that you ask about their production practices and make sure you feel comfortable with how they are caring for the soil and animals because your health will be affected by what is done to the soil and those animals. If they haven't heard about Holistic Management, ask them to visit our website. There are lots of opportunities for training and self-study.
