HMI is excited to announce that Rebecca Burgess, Executive Director of Fibershed, and Chair of the Board for Carbon Cycle Institute will be presenting at the 2016 HMI Gathering. She has over a decade of sharing about the fascinating intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. She has taught at Westminster College, Harvard University, and has created workshops for a range of NGOs and corporations. She is the author of the best-selling book Harvesting Color, a bioregional look into the natural dye traditions of North America. She has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within our region’s Northern California Fibershed to pilot the regenerative fiber systems model at the community scale.
The Fibershed, Building a Movement
In her presentation, Rebecca will talk about how a Fibershed is a strategic geography that defines a textile resource base. Within these strategic geographies are communities of people, plants and animals that are all dependent upon soil. From the micro to the observable macro, communities we cannot see define those that we can. In this presentation we will explore how place defines aesthetics. How community is by nature a relational term, and how relationships are the foundation for functioning and vibrant fiber cultures. This visually rich presentation will outline the soil-to-soil textile processes that are underway in over 40 international communities.
