On October 11 and 12, 2024, a collaborative land planning workshop brought together Holistic Management International (HMI), Dixon Water Foundation, the National Grazing Lands Coalition (NatGLC), and Texas Grazing Lands Coalition (Texas GLC). The two-day event focused on regenerative agriculture, sustainable land management, and Holistic Management planning processes, and it was guided by renowned instructors Wayne Knight and Linda Pechin-Long. With the support of the Dixon Water Foundation, special thanks go to Hilary Knight and Becky Ford, whose contributions helped make this workshop possible. Thanks to Ranch Bot and RangeWard for your support of the event.
Hands-On Learning
The first day of the workshop introduced participants to sustainable land planning principles on small acreage. A total of 34 attendees explored how to utilize existing infrastructure to optimize plant recovery—a crucial aspect of regenerative agriculture. During a hands-on tour of Dixon’s ranch, attendees observed firsthand how factors like animal nutrition and economic considerations come into play in a holistic grazing system. Participants examined the growth potential of various paddocks within Dixon’s horse traps, gaining practical insights into managing animal impact and grazing strategies while ensuring adequate plant recovery times.
One critical discussion was on adaptability and how to navigate between fast and slow growth conditions in a pasture. Participants explored the concept of “trigger dates”—predetermined points in the season that would initiate actions such as destocking or other proactive measures to reduce the impacts of low rainfall or drought. By planning for these triggers, managers can support plant resilience and make decisions that align with holistic, sustainable management goals.
Holistic Land Planning
Building on the lessons from Day 1, Day 2 focused on the Holistic Land Planning Procedure. Dixon’s President, Casey Wade, and Ranch Manager, Jake McNamara, shared insights and challenges related to the ranch’s current infrastructure layout. With maps, photographs, and cost considerations in hand, participants applied the land planning steps to reimagine a section of Dixon Ranch. This activity included strategic placement of fences, water access points, and animal handling facilities, ensuring alignment with Dixon’s specific management needs and limitations.
By the end of the two days, attendees had gained a comprehensive understanding of Holistic Land Planning practices designed to foster resilience, adaptability, and sustainability. This workshop was a valuable opportunity for land managers to work hands-on with regenerative agriculture concepts, empowering them to support healthy ecosystems and sustainable ranching practices.
