The 3R Ranch of Beulah, CO is approximately 10,360 acres with about half in grazable forest, 4,530 acres in rangeland, and 720 acres of irrigated pasture and hayland nestled in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies at an elevation ranging from 7,800 to 5,700 feet. The ranch passed from the Nolan Land Grant to Peter and Emily Dotson in 1868. Reeves and Betsy Brown leased a small feedlot and stock farm in Lubbock, TX until they had enough savings to buy a stock farm at Cameron, TX, and operated it until they were able to fulfill their dream of buying the 3R Ranch in 1981.
When Holistic Management came into their lives in 1985, they were sure that this was the way to manage their ranch. They took and retook every course in Holistic Management available to them. The Browns say that HMI has been their “leader and teacher and joy”. Today, the ranch runs 450 Black Angus/Simmy cross cows. Irrigation water comes from the South Saint Charles River including three pivots and occasional floods. They have a small hunting operation with excellent game such as antelope, elk, deer, and turkey.
With their son having no interest in ranching, the couple feels fortunate to have succession plans to leave the ranch to Chad Helvey who grew up in eastern Pueblo County, played serious football, and attended Colorado State University-Pueblo.
