On December 1st, HMI Certified Educator Angie Boudro presented two Holistic Management sessions at the Women in Sustainable Agriculture Conference in Portland, Oregon. This 5th annual event brings over 300 women farmers, ranchers, and educators from around the country to talk about key issues of sustainable agriculture. Both of Angie's sessions were well attended. The first one was titled: "Balancing Farm and Family: How Holistic Management can help you live the life you want." –In this session Angie focused on how Holistic Management is a decision-making framework that helps you identify your core values and make decisions that support those values. She explained the holistic goal setting process as well as the decision-testing process and gave some hands-on time to explore these tools. The second session was titled: "Enterprise Analysis: Identifying winners and losers." In this session Angie explained how diversification can increase overall financial health, but keeping or adding unprofitable enterprises can rob you of time and energy. She explained how to conduct a Gross Profit Analysis and plan for profit as an expense, rather than taking what is left in helping people discern the best enterprise mix for their farm or ranch. HMI's Beginning Women Farmer program that was funded by the USDA for 6 years trained over 500 women farmers in seven states. We are currently collaborating with Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepeneurship in New York for another Beginning Farmer Program starting in February.
