You Really Are What You Eat

The old

saying 'you are what you eat' has never been any truer than it is today.  With an increasing number of food borne illnesses originating from improper food handling techniques, coupled with a growing concern about the safety of pesticides and herbicides such as glyphosate, we’re all starting to wonder where our food comes from. In fact, in 2015,the World Health Organization (WHO) declared glyphosate a probable carcinogen, prompting the FDA’s decision in February of this year to finally start testing crops for residue levels. Testing is expected to begin sometime this year, and will begin with corn and soybeans, followed by milk, eggs, and other foods. While it may be reassuring that this testing will begin, what can you and your family do in the meantime to ensure that the food you bring into your home is fresh, nutrient-dense, and is not covered in pesticides? Experts suggest that those that wish to cut down or eliminate exposure to toxic chemicals such as glyphosate look to purchase organic or locally sourced foods.  One of easiest ways to do that is to shop at your local farmers market.  Foods grown in their natural environment are likely to need fewer, if any pesticides and herbicides.  And why not get to know your local farmers and ranchers?  Wouldn’t you like to know exactly how your food was grown?  Where it was grown?  Visiting a farmers market is your opportunity to do so.  As an added bonus, shopping local will also boost your local economy as well. At HMI, we take pride in providing farmers and ranchers with the tools they need to continue to produce, fresh, local, nutrient-dense food without the use of herbicides and pesticides.  Visit our website today to see how you can help your local farmers and ranchers.
