Crystal Cook Marshall, Seed H Cooperative Corporation President
Dr. Cook Marshall finished her PhD in Science and Technology Studies in Society at Virginia Tech fall 2017, examining the potential for land-based industry growth in Southwest Virginia, Southern West Virginia, and I-77NC. With Tartt,and Bandy she co-founded SEEDH, a for profit producers cooperative headquartered in the Appalachian coalfields region. With her husband Edward she has farmed since 2011. Cook Marshall also has a strong background in marketing, public relations, start-ups, social media, web presence, events, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, she has a long history in research, education, project management, and working overseas. She is originally from Bluefield, WV. Photo courtesy of Nancy Andrews.
Ben Bartlett, HMI Professional Certified Educator
Ben and wife Denise have operated a pasture-based sheep and cattle operation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for almost 40 years. They use their 400 May lambing ewes and 150 stocker steers to finance their traveling habit now that they have retired from Michigan State University Extension and school librarian positions respectfully. The use of Holistic Management decision-making for over 20 years has empowered them to build the soil health of their farm, share their sustainable farming methods with local school children and most importantly, is enabling them to pass on to their three children and nine grandchildren both a philosophy and land they can be proud of.
Jason Tartt operates T&T Organics, LLC in McDowell County, WV. He has been farming for 11 years, and has facilitated the introduction of high tunnel production into the coalfield setting in a close partnership with the USDA NRCS. Since 2016 he has been mentoring young people into farming, and in March 2020, through an EDGE and Coalfield Development Partnership, will train seven locals in mountain farming, including high tunnel, honey, tree tapping, and some livestock production. Tartt brings business and operations management and development to the table, gained from his career as a government subcontractor in the defense industry, where he was also heavily involved in contract bids, negotiations, and execution of $100M+ projects. A US Army veteran, he possesses extensive management experience, is highly skilled in employee development, and is known as an excellent team builder. In 2019, Tartt, along with other EDGE and SEEDH members began training in Holistic Management, and he is excited not only about its agricultural applications but also decision-making methods.
