HMI Professional Certified Educator
I have practical knowledge and experience as a farmer working in a wide range of environmental conditions from Ireland, France and Australia to the extreme deserts of Saudi Arabia and MENA. In Saudi Arabia I have worked on four dairy farms including managing an embryo transfer project, with one such farm milking 24,000 cows, with 19,500 young stock and staff of 690. Due to the large number of staff from many different countries, good communication and a sense of community is vital. Encouraging individuals to take on greater responsibilities, instilling in them the confidence to learn more and make decisions themselves is key, whilst bringing their team members along with them. My experience as a Holistic Management® consultant includes communal settings in Africa, small diversified farms in Ireland, commercial farms focused on developing permaculture approaches on pivots in Saudi Arabia and the development of pilot farm projects in Iraq and Ghana. Given the importance of food security in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I have been researching the development of a grassfed beef unit using appropriate livestock that have innate adapted genetic traits to withstand these harsh environmental conditions. Their natural ability to convert poor forage efficiently while thriving in this environment can build natural biological capital. Implementing the appropriate grazing management of livestock on the land regenerates the biological community. By integrating livestock with cropping in Saudi, soil biology can be regenerated in these desert lands. I am a firm believer in regenerative agriculture and biological farming. Observing ecosystem degradation throughout my working life I have seen the importance of looking after the land. Using livestock brings life back to the soil. By integrating livestock, soil biology can be regenerated, wildlife supported, biodiversity increased and an ecosystem revitalised. I understand the significance of a diverse biology to generate a healthy soil and the intrinsic link to producing wholesome nutritious food and robust ecosystems. As a HMI Certified Educator I continue to further my education on regenerative agriculture to impart this knowledge and experience to others. I am currently studying for a MSc Organic Farming. I am a member of the Pasture Fed Livestock Association (PFLA) UK and Ireland, an organisation of beef, lamb and dairy farmers who raise their livestock on pasture and grass. Given my experience of working in such a diverse range of environments with their many challenges and rewards and my passion for regenerative farming, I relish the opportunity to teach people that there is always another way.
