HMI was saddened to hear of the death of Allan Nation, the publisher of The Stockman Grass Farmer, one of the top grazing newspapers in the country. The Stockman Grass Farmer was founded in 1947. When Allan began running it in 1977 he worked to help ranchers and farmers realize that they were grass farmers first. Allan travelled the world as he studied and shared about numerous grazing methods. He was one of the first to highlight Holistic Management and the many practitioners who were getting results on the land including Greg Judy, Joel Salatin, and Ian Mitchell-Innes. He also introduced his readers to the concept of “low-stress livestock handling” as taught by Bud Williams, and his publication always was seen as a place to learn about innovative grazing practices.
Allan is survived by his wife Carolyn, and daughters Tiffany and Summerlyn, as well as six grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him or were influenced by his work. HMI offers our condolences to his family.

Alan Nation was the bedrock on which I have built my grazing operation. I’ve attended almost all of his grazing courses in Jackson and am an avid reader of The Stockman Grass Farmer. He will be sorely missed.

What great loss. Only last night I handed over my current copy of the SGF to a potential new convert in Israel. We must double our efforts to keep up his great work of spreading the word.

Thank you, Ann, from all of us at The Stockman Grass Farmer for this kind commemoration of Allan’s life. He is continually missed by all of us here at The Stockman Grass Farmer. We are thankful that Joel Salatin, who was a great friend of Allan’s and who is also a great friend of HMI, has come on board as our editor.
