If you are concerned about the risks in farming or ranching whether because of markets or weather, come to HMI’s 2016 Gathering to learn how you can reduce that risk. Graeme Hand has worked as an industrial chemist, international marketer, meat industry consultant as well as farm consultant to many family and corporate farmers. He has a special interest in working with family farms to create profitable, regenerative farm businesses which are enjoyable to work in.
Using Dynamic Budgeting to Reduce Climate and Price Risk when Selecting Enterprises
In his talk on reducing risk, Graeme will explain how using gross margin or gross profit analysis to determine which enterprises pass the testing questions in the Holistic Management framework may result in selecting inappropriate enterprises with unacceptable levels of risks with low financial returns without further analysis. Dynamic budgeting, which includes the three major sources of financial risk (debt, price and rainfall) affecting financial performance, overcomes this problem. This presentation will discuss how this research clearly shows that in many instances grazing of livestock is more profitable over time than cropping. How to use dynamic budgeting in selecting enterprises will also be discussed.
Using Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM) to Increase Adoption of Holistic Management
Graeme will also be talking about how at its core Holistic Management is about behavior change. To date, most attempts to help people adopt Holistic Management have relied primarily upon information and education. Numerous studies document that behavior change rarely occurs as a result of simply providing information, as information alone cannot address the diversity of barriers that exist for Holistic Management. This presentation will focus on using the science-based CBSM methodology to increase the adoption of the key behaviors required for successful adoption of Holistic Management. Research on the barriers and benefits as well as strategies developed to address these barriers and benefits will be presented with a focus on increasing the success rate of planned grazing.
